The SCG is a disgrace in terms of the playing surface and dangerous for AFL players plying their trade on it. Sydney Swans home ground not up to AFL standard. Indeed, it mirrors the disappointing season the Swans are currently having in 2025. A concert was held on the playing surface some time ago and the ground has never recovered from the butchery engendered then upon it. Last night, once again, AFL players from both teams could not keep their feet and it is only a matter of time before a serious injury will entail. Perhaps, these have already occurred.
SCG Surface A Danger To AFL Players & The Swans
Fox footy commentators have repeatedly questioned the integrity of the surface during matches this year. The contest and the performances of both teams were repeatedly marred by slipping over at crucial times last night in the Sydney vs Carlton clash. It is amazes me that in a multi-million dollar business like AFL we still see stuff ups of this magnitude occurring during seasons. Thousands of peoples livelihoods depend upon the AFL, least of all the careers of these elite sportsmen. A season ending injury could cost an AFL player hundreds of thousands of dollars and teams millions.
Swans Dire SCG Playing Surface Risking AFL Players
What accountability does the management of the SCG have in relation to the Sydney Swans? There must be contractual clauses regarding the state of the playing field surface and its upkeep. The Sydney Swans club itself must have some right to redress if the ground surface is deemed to be below standard for AFL, especially due to the use of the stadium for an extra gig like a concert being the cause of it. The Sydney Swans home ground not up to AFL standard must be redressed.
Swans Vs Carlton Blues At The SCG
Despite slipping over a lot all night, particularly at one end of the ground, the Swans recorded a gutsy win. This was only their second home victory in 2025. Carlton are a physical, ground ball winning side and it was a slog in wet conditions. Eventually, the undermanned Sydney team (in terms of their stars) wore the Blues down and outran them in the last quarter.
“Sydney have got themselves back on the winners list after hosting a gruelling Friday night of football, coming from behind in the final quartet to defeat Carlton by 16 points.
The home side trailed by six, seven and five points respectively at every break, before a 35-point final term from the Swans saw them come out victors 11.12 (78) over the Blues’ 9.8 (62). “
Isaac Heeney and Chad Warner were enormous in their efforts to win victory for the home team. Brody Grundy got better as the night wore on and kicked an inspirational goal to boot. Carlton looked to have the edge for most of the match but could not resist the Swan’s onslaught in the final term.
Out On The Full Or Not?
Isaac Heeney was awarded a free kick on the basis of an out on the full decision against Jacob Weitering. Heeney converted this into a goal. The ball was kicked into the ground by Weitering prior to crossing the boundary line and so many thought that this was not strictly out on the full. However, I wonder if you kicked the ball via a drop kick across the boundary line would it be out on the full? The drop kick and stab pass used to be features of Australian Rules football back in the day.
“AFL is home of the cheap shot in season 2025. Players are dissenting acrimoniously in this atmosphere of nasty tit for tat spite so prevalent on the field. Is it any wonder that Willi Rioli might be taking things a mite too far? I mean he leaves the field and cops a barrage load of vile racist taunts and death threats on social media. Yes, that does not condone his behaviour but let’s see it for what is really going on at this point in time. Social media is a shit show of antagonism. I mean the algorithms are set up this way to drive traffic and engagement from enraging the viewers. The players are young men by and large. The fans a mixed bag, I suppose. This situation calls for leadership but it is sadly missing – MIA, right now.”
