Corporate media in Australia, once again, does the bidding of the fossil fuel sector in spreading misinformation and distortions about electric vehicles (EV). Spotlight on Channel 7 nickel EV lies reveals hit job on battery production in China. Mainstream media televises program chock full of errors and false claims. There is so much BS out there in Australia about EVs and mud sticks in the minds of many. Standards of accuracy and truth in the media are degrading in the current era, with conservatives thinking that they can get away with anything in the age of Trump.

Tell Me Lies, Sweet Little EV Lies On 7’s Spotlight

Vested interests in the ownership of Seven West Media put it firmly in the camp of promoting fossil fuel propaganda. Miners and companies in their sphere of influence are dedicated to delaying renewables and prolonging dependence upon fossil fuels in Australia. Disengaged voters and dummies alike believe negative stories about things like EVs when they are presented by programs like Spotlight that purport to be investigative journalism writ large. If the facts are wrong and misrepresented, then, we the public have a problem on our hands.

Channel 7’s Spotlight & Their EV Distortions

The facts are that 70% of all dirty nickel is used in the manufacture of stainless steel with only around 5% used in EV batteries. This was not inferred or made clear in the Spotlight program that aired on Channel 7. This appeared to be a hit job on the renewable energy sector during a federal election with the desired outcome to damage voter trust in EVs. It told a story that EVs are not good for the environment, quite the reverse, and this is not true based on their presented information. Distorted facts were promulgated by Spotlight on Channel 7 nickel EV lies. Powerful and wealthy men think that they can ride roughshod over things like media factuality standards. Kerry Stokes may be taking a leaf out of Elon Musk’s MO in this regard.

Established Misconceptions About Renewables

The number of people in Australia, mainly men, who have misinformed ideas about EVs and the renewable energy transition taking place is testament to the work being done by allies of the fossil fuel industry. Our 2 main political parties accept large donations from the fossil fuel sector. The mainstream media feels beholden to them for their advertising revenue in these straitened times. Wealth and power has been in their camp for many decades and this breeds complacency among the rest of us. They will not go quietly into the night of their own volition.

Much Ado About EV Battery Claims

“Liam Bartlett, chief correspondent of 7News Spotlight, was filming a press conference with Australian climate change and energy minister Chris Bowen at the Sydney International EV AutoShow in November for an expose on Chinese-backed Indonesian nickel mining for EV batteries.

In the footage aired on Sunday night, Bartlett was going back and forth with the minister when YouTuber Sam Evans stepped in to wrap the reporter up, prompting Mr Bowen to end the media opportunity.”

Spotlight Not Letting The Facts Get In The Way Of A Hit Job

“Last night, Channel 7 aired the latest episode of their Spotlight program. The focus was on Indonesian mining practices that reportedly result in emission between 9 and 11x higher than Australian operations.

Electric vehicle mining equipment

While it’s clear that workplace health and safety practices in Indonesia are clearly lacking compared to our standards here, the main focus and headline of the story targeted  electric vehicles.

The show title was ‘The  EV con: Spotlight investigation into the deadly side of electric vehicles sold in Australia’.

During the episode, the presenter spent much of the time attempting to make EV owners feel guilty for their vehicle purchase, suggesting they are fueling issues in the supply chain.

The problem with this conclusion, is that it’s not found in evidence.”

The Channel 7 Ethos Of Australia

Channel 7 and Kerry Stokes represent a side of Australia, which overvalues what I call the Anglo-settler consciousness. That Australia, as a postcolonial nation, should be run by white men, mining interests, and that they represent the real deal here. He supports the celebration of our fighting spirit in the guise of Ben Roberts Smith, despite his propensity for killing unarmed Afghanis. Spotlight supported tough, real Australian men, like the rapist Bruce Lehrmann sewing his wild oats upon a comatose Brittany Higgins in the Liberal senator’s office at Parliament House. Come on Australia! Come on Aussie! Women and renewable energy do not have a place at the big table, according to this mentality. These things oughtn’t power Australia, rather they should be sidelined for the longest time. The macho chest beating fuelling this attitude revels in what Trump is doing to America. They see it as a return to the natural order. If telling a few well timed lies can assist, well, why not spread the disinformation.

“Australia is full of progressive laws that just don’t get enforced. I call us the land of toothless tigers and unlike the Tasmanian tiger these are not rare or extinct. Indeed, they are prolific. Black market tobacco grey in Australia because it is so readily available. Tobacconists stock black market tobacco openly in defiance of the laws of the land. Why is this so? Is it a bit like the long held laisse faire attitude of male police officers toward domestic violence in this country? Smokers don’t like paying so much for their ciggies and most cops in Australia are blokes. They just don’t see the problem.”
