The ABC and its legacy media pack leader, News Corp, are unable to adjust to the new political landscape downunder. The Liberal Party has become an irrelevance to modern metropolitan Australians. However, the mainstream media are stuck in a 2 party adversarial model in their coverage of federal politics nationally. Thus, we have disproportionate amounts of attention being paid to a political movement that the bulk of the population have moved past. Aussie news stuck in adversarial 2 party politics model. The LNP Coalition was trounced at the last federal election because Australians were sick of far right toxic masculinity masquerading as democratically elected representation. The Tony Abbott/Sky News Australia led hard Right faction of the Libs were completely out of step with a younger and more dynamic Australia.
ABC & News Corp Misreading The Room Re-Aussie Politics
The news and current affairs producers downunder, however, are still looking for the old duality to fire up their tired vision of Australian politics. In reality, for decades Australia has sported a limited choice between 2 centre right parties both conservative in nature. The LNP had been moving further Right and longed to ape the success of Donald Trump and his extreme agenda. Instead, the national electorate rejected this extremist vision in no uncertain terms. The Libs hardly hold a metro seat around the nation with the Teals and Labor picking up these seats.
Australian Media Out Of Step With The Electorate
What Australians want and require from their media, news and current affairs programs is a focus on progressive voices, policies and ideas for the betterment of the country. What they don’t want are the culture wars endlessly rehashed and fed by an old and outdated media perspective. If these producers must have an adversarial dynamic to dramatise their political coverage make it about a fight between progressives and stodgy Labor. It is time for Australia to rediscover its progressive soul. To resurrect the nation that was one of the first to give women the vote, albeit after New Zealand.
Legacy Media & Outdated Political Coverage Downunder
One of the many drawbacks of having a media landscape dominated by an American owned company, News Corp, is that it holds a partisanship on steroids perspective. Fox News is one of the evils plaguing the USA and brought the world Donald Trump. Sky News Australia is a mini me version of Fox News. We will never kick the polarizing habit so beloved of Murdoch whilst we blithely ignore the elephant in the room. A company that doesn’t pay its corporate taxes via the American sleight of hand of shifting profits to tax havens is no proud exemplar of corporate media standards. Aussie news stuck in adversarial 2 party politics model.
A small bunch of far right politicians representing a tiny percentage of the Australian population deciding to emulate their hero Donald Trump and ditch a possible future commitment to net zero is hardly news. Wake up old media and get with what is actually happening in Australian cities! It is the 21C and not Dad and Dave on the farm.
“Big Swinging Dicks Or More Moderate Vaginas?
Who are the male candidates for the leadership position of the Libs at the federal level? Angus Taylor, Andrew Hastie, Dan Tehan? There is not a long list to choose from because the list of MPs is brief in itself. Is this a battle for the soul of the Libs or will it be a well thought out plan to rebuild the lost ground from the centre? It cannot be both. The macho boys want to run a bullying Trump style operation but the girls know that this has been tried and failed with the Australian people. Extremism is not a populist thing downunder.”
