The murder of Carol Clay and Russel Hill in the Wonnangatta Valley are gun deaths. Greg Lynn is accused of the murders and will stand trail in the Victorian Supreme Court. Gun deaths in Australia: The murder of two campers in Victoria is worrying for a number of reasons. There are 2.6 million registered firearms in Australia. If licenced gun owners are travelling with their guns it makes for dangerous travelling. Disputes over camping sites may turn into life threatening situations, as, it seems, was the case in this instance.

Campers Carrying Guns in Australia

I know that I don’t want campers travelling around Australia with guns. This nasty double murder is the prime example of why. Guns can turn disagreements into deadly situations. Under what possible legal basis can a gun owner justify carrying a firearm on a camping trip? My understanding is that guns are used on properties to eradicate pests or at sporting clubs that do shooting.

“A person must not carry a controlled weapon unless it is carried in a safe and secure manner consistent with the lawful excuse for which it is possessed or is carried or is to be used. Penalty: 20 penalty units. (3) In this section lawful excuse includes— (a) the pursuit of any lawful employment, duty or activity; and (b) participation in any lawful sport, recreation or entertainment; and (c) the legitimate collection, display or exhibition of weapons— but does not include for the purpose of self-defence.”

Authorised Version No. 072 Control of Weapons Act 1990 No. 24 of 1990 Authorised Version incorporating amendments as at 1 March 2019, Victoria.

Gun Deaths In Queensland

The recent gun deaths of two young police officers and a neighbour in Queensland by the Train brothers and Stacy Train highlight the dangers of guns in Australia. Crazy people with automatic weapons can massacre more human beings than those without access to them. Nathaniel Train travelled illegally over the NSW/QLD border carrying a number of weapons. The QLD police were aware of this and the mass murder resulted in response to their following up on this. Warning bells about the number of guns in Australia should be going off. It is time to tighten up on gun laws and to police them more assiduously. It is important to remember that two of the Trains’ were former school principals, which shows that extremism can infect anyone.

Deadly force should not be in the hands of anyone else other than trained police. Campers should not be carrying guns on their camping trips in Australia. Gun deaths in Australia: The murder of two campers in Victoria is why we need to get the guns out of the hands of ordinary citizens. Even the police over-use guns, in my view, regularly killing individuals in violent altercations who were armed with knives. The fewer guns in the community the less call there will be for the police to draw their weapons. America has a mass shooting on a daily basis, according to available statistics. This is because their gun problem is out of control. Let us not go down that road.
