Those demon drugs are plaguing another AFL club it seems. Recreational drugs are the bane of professional sporting organisations, as highly paid players with too much time on their hands fall prey to addictive pursuits. Druggy Demons in AFL spotlight, with one player already suspended and a dark cloud over other high profile Melbourne FC players.
“Melbourne Football Club is under pressure to conduct a “deep dive” investigation into its culture after police said they were assessing allegations of drug trafficking against AFL player Joel Smith. Sport Integrity Australia has alleged that Smith trafficked or attempted to traffic cocaine in September 2022.”

I remember the West Coast Eagles druggy culture and Ben Cousins the addicted champion at the centre of it. Professionalism in sport brings with it a dangerous combination of elements. You get young men at the height of their physical abilities and appetites being feted. They are paid way too much money for what they actually do. They have too much time on their hands and few at that age are really plugged into selflessness and helping others. I mean they are encouraged to focus upon their own athletic abilities to the detriment of everything else. Partners can suffer, families can be neglected, and the game and their performance in it is everything.
Drugs, Drunken Behaviours & AFL Players
There is nothing more selfish than a professional athlete! Let us call a spade a spade. The laser sharp focus is on them and them alone for 99% of their lives, when at the peak of their brief careers. The professionalism of sport sees young men and women begin these practices as school kids in preparation for making it as elite sports people. We have seen how tough it is for high profile sports folk to cope with retirement post their short careers. The self-absorption does not leave them overnight and they often go into spirals of destructive behaviour when the limelight departs. Ex-Olympic swimmers on drugs and DV charges. Drunken footy players doing disgraceful acts and captured on social media. Ex-sporting stars in court accused of rape and sexual misconduct charges. The road from lofty stardom on the sporting track and field is littered with damaged reputations.
Keeping Your Mind & Nose On The Job
How do topline AFL clubs keep their cattle out of other people’s pastures? How do they keep over muscled and pumped up young players from snorting the bejesus out of life? From dabbling in designer drugs and in the underwear of the opposite sex? The druggy Demons are in the AFL spotlight now and more will be revealed in coming weeks I am sure. No matter the denials from captain and coach.
