We have just seen Australia’s worst child sex abuser caught sentenced to 27 years in prison for his offences. Ashley Paul Griffith. However, in 2009, a complaint was made by a mother about this guy and her young child in his care at the time. No action was taken and the cops spent very little time interviewing the child. Queensland police failed to act on worst paedophile ever. Another 2 complaints are in the police system relating to complaints made by parents against Griffith, which again led to no action being undertaken by police.

You know, when I heard about this case, I was shocked that this level of perpetration is still going on in 2024. I mean, we have been aware of this stuff for bloody decades now. You would think that there would be better systems in place to catch child sex abusers working in child care. There is way too much discretionary power invested in police. We cannot be reliant on a couple of run of the mill police detectives making these big calls. Parents go to a police station to make a complaint and you don’t know who you are going to get. Sherlock Holmes or nobody bloody home?
WA Police Disgrace & The Claremont Serial Killer
I will tell you another example involving the bloke who went on to become the Claremont serial killer, murdering several young women in Perth – Bradley Edwards. Edwards was arrested by cops when he was a young guy for, get this, bursting into a workplace and cable tying up a woman who worked there. What did the police do in this instance, they let him off with a warning. Some stupid copper thought that he would give the young bloke another chance or something, Yeah, well we know how that worked out for the victims and their families.
What it highlights is there is too much discretionary power for individual cops in making calls.
Daniel Morcombe Killer Walked Free For 11 Years
In Europe there are investigating magistrates involved in building cases against transgressors and not just the police. These magistrates supervise what goes on. Another case involving Queensland police was the murder of the young boy, Daniel Morcombe. He was sexually abused and killed by Brett Peter Cowan. It took 11 years for the detective in charge of the case to finally arrest Cowan. This is despite another detective urging that Cowan was guilty right from the start.
Police egos getting in the way of justice being fulfilled are not rare occurrences. Individual cops can define what cases get investigated and how they are investigated, as in which directions.
It is time to overhaul the whole judicial system and the role of the police force within it. They are overworked, undertrained, and not the right instruments for certain societal issues. Domestic Violence (DV) is a huge issue and the current police set up is not fit for purpose for dealing with this tsunami. Women are being murdered by partners and former partners almost daily. Similarly, the police are not the best people to be dealing with those suffering extreme episodes of psychosis and mental breakdowns. If all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail. How many people in distress with knives end up being shot dead by police? Too many. These situations need deescalating and not overworked cops carrying deadly force. Yes, these people can be dangerous but surely specialist paramedic counsellors with defensive training would be better fit for purpose. It would save lives.
We can all go around blaming the police for their short comings or we can do something about it.
